Packing Tips
Check Resources
Review the Packing a Rucksack for a Weekend Activity and Preparing for Adventure resources for guidance on how/what to pack. Some items in those resources may not be needed for all activities, and sections will advise if additional gear is required. As a general rule, follow the provided packing list as your primary list.
Pack Together
Youth Members must pack their own rucksack with parent/guardian guidance so they know where their gear is.
Equipment Quality
Gear must be fit for purpose and designed for nature. It doesn’t need to be expensive or a top brand—outdoor ranges from stores like Decathlon or Lidl are perfect. Just ensure items are built for the outdoors rather than everyday casual wear.
Waterproofing Standards
Rain jackets and trousers must be fully waterproof and windproof to serve as an effective outer layer. Puffy coats, jackets with fur hoods, and hoodless coats are not suitable for outdoor activities.
Hiking Boots
Must be comfortable, durable boots designed for uneven terrain that cover the ankle to give proper support.
Backpack Protection
Line the main compartment of the backpack with a thick plastic bag (or heavy-duty liner) and pack individual items inside smaller plastic bags to ensure everything stays completely dry.
Packed Lunch
Provide a balanced, filling lunch (such as high-energy sandwiches, pasta, or wraps accompanied by fruit and a snack) and avoid excessive sweets, fizzy drinks, or junk food.
No Penknives
Youth Members do not need penknives; the Group provides them when required.
